In this photo taken moments later during the first attack, the Yamato plows forward.

A geyser of water from what was probably a near miss from a bomb can be seen behind the ship.

Note the light cruiser Yahagi on the left of the photo - she appears to still be under way, and has turned to avoid attack.

The Yahagi was initially in the van of the formation, and pulled away from Yamato as the attack began as Captain Hara hoped to draw some of the attacking planes away from the main ship.

However, a lucky torpedo hit early on blew off part of her stern and killed everyone in the engine room, quickly rendering her motionless, where she would be hit by another 11 torpedoes and 7 bombs before sinking (see later photos).
